Event lead qualification

A useful qualification process helps the team understand whether there is a reason for another conversation. Start with the information that will change the next sales action—not a longer list of questions.

Define useful qualification before the event.

Agree on the customers, applications and needs your team can genuinely serve. Then decide which facts are essential at the booth and which can wait. A relevant need and a clear next step may matter more than completing every field.

  • Fit: is the application or buying situation relevant to what you offer?
  • Need: what problem, goal or purchase is the person exploring?
  • Timing: is there a meaningful deadline or a longer-term interest?
  • Influence and role: who is involved in evaluation and the decision?
Qualification should make the next conversation smarter, not make the booth conversation harder.

Keep the conversation human.

Let the attendee explain what brought them over. Use relevant follow-up questions rather than working through a rigid interrogation. If timing or decision involvement is unclear, record it as unknown; do not turn a guess into a qualification fact.

For example, “What are you hoping to improve?” can reveal the need and application together. “Who else would find this useful?” can help clarify the next discussion without demanding a job title as proof of influence.

Make the team’s interpretation consistent.

Agree on plain-language definitions and review a few sample conversations together. A badge scan proves a contact was captured; it does not prove fit, urgency or buying intent. Use the same essential facts across the team while leaving room for context that does not fit a checkbox.

Before the doors open

  • Agree on what a good-fit opportunity looks like before the event.
  • Separate essential facts from details that can wait for a later discussion.
  • Capture need, relevant application, timing and the person’s role.
  • Record what remains unknown rather than guessing.
  • Confirm the next conversation and who owns it.

Give qualification a place in the workflow.
